Ajax and URLs

February 1, 2007, 5:44 pm
I know this solutions exists but doubt whether its existence is ubiquitous. The Wikipedia article on Ajax [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ajax_(programming) ] mentions it in 'Cons'.

Straight to the point. One very common problem with ajax->dynamically updated pages is that, since content is fetched and updated within the page itself, the original webpage url doesn't change and hence it is impossible to bookmark/remember them.

For example, the video comments on youtube. If a video has ten pages of comments, when clicking the page numbers, the comments are updated dynamically without the url ever changing. So what if you want to bookmark page no:9 ? Not possible.

The simplest solution is to make use of the 'url fragment identifier' or whatever that comes after the # in a url. eg: http://something.com/page#here-it-goes

Javascript can update the fragment identifier dynamically with a simple

CODE:
document.location.href = '#whatever';

On page load, something like RegEx could be used to parse the query

CODE:
var thisUrl = document.location.href;
var query = thisUrl.split('#');
alert(query[1]);

So if page numbers or required variables are set as the fragment identifiers, it is possible to efficiently make Javascript process it (nearly) and make Ajax act normal with page urls.

Hangman's hill, Epping Forest - Scary !

November 7, 2006, 9:36 pm
Epping Forest, South East England is a an ancient forest formed after the last ice age, approx. 8000 BC (Wikipedia).

Nov 6th, night, around 2 AM, me and a two of my friends drove to the Epping Forest. Its famous for ghost sightings and paranormal activities. A lot of killings have happened and a lot of dead bodies have been buried in this forest. The roads a really good and there are no street lights at all. When you enter the forest premises, instantly everything goes dark and you can feel terror creeping into you slowly, well I was very scared! The temperature was around 3-5 degree C, very cold. We roamed around the forest in the car, hoping to encounter something paranormal.

There is one huge church in the center of the forest and a cemetry around it and trust me, it scares the hell out of you! And yesterdays thick fog and moonlight gave the whole place a morbid effect, just like in the movies. I was breathless icon_twisted

We went further deep and there is this small hill called the "Hangman's hill". Its said that convicts / criminals used to be hung here. Also, popular-legend says that if you stop your car on the hill, turn the engine off and put the gears into neutral, the car would be pulled uphill. We decided to try it out and IT WORKED! We were so freaked out and scared, it was like the car was being pushed up and sitting at the back, I could feel the force! I am sure the car was being pulled uphill at atleast 3-5 miles/hour. We were absolutely baffed and so freaked out that we got the hell out of the hill and to make things worse, we saw a black furry cat at a farmhouse's fence, looking at us. That was it, we flee for our lives, only felt relieved when we were back on the A406 highway, back home.

I've always been highly curious watching all those ghost buster shows on the TV, but this was an amazing experience.

I was reocodring everything on my camera through out, hoping to find something. Back home, I thouroughly checked the videos, nothing unusual or unnatural unfortunately.

School reopens

October 2, 2006, 4:21 pm
After a long four and a half month long 'summer vacation', the university reopened today. To my dismay, the Business computing teacher started off with 'Introduction to computers'. Input and output devices, CPU, RAM, 'a software is a set of instructions' and all those crap for the one hundredth time. One girl even stood up and aske the teacher, 'if we disconnect the computer from the power supply after shutting down, will it damage the computer?' and when asked for an example for input devices, someone shouted Speakers and Harddisk. It felt funny at first, but then depression crawled in :(

I wonder what am I doing in this country, 5 months classes a year (pretty useless) and the rest 7 months vacation.

Virgin broadband - bad deal

How bad can an ISP go? ( London , 25/09/2006 )
I recently moved house and applied for a new Virgin broadband connection as my ex-ISP Telewest was unavailable there. Even though Telewest was expensive, they had a pretty good connection and service.

So last Friday evening, I got my Virgin 8Mbps/unlimited connection ($46/month) activated, after a week's time of waiting/ I quickly setup a wireless network with a Belkin ADSL mimo router and everything went just fine. First thing I did was check the connection speed using some popular online services and the results were impressive. A few minutes passed, and to my dismay I found that the connection speed was fluctuating every now and then, for no reason. To make things worse, I found that a lot of websites were'nt opening on the connection, like digg.com, Hotmail.com, my university website etc.. etc.. Even the Microsoft site wouldn't load and MSN messenger wouldn't work. Weird, I played with the wireless configs, dns settings, tried everything I knew, but no avail.

The interesting part
-----------------------
I then phoned up the Virgin customer support, which costs $.50 / minute. To my surprise, support was very rude, like "I asked for your username and password mate, nothing else". Waste of money and time, they were helpless and hopeless.

Then I tried Virgin's online livesupport chat room. This time, the support wasn't rude, but stupid. Do you use IE? Have you checked your settings? standard questions. "Try using some proxy servers" ! that was the final solution the guy suggested. When I told him that was totally absurd and stupid, he said he's forward the issue to the technical department and said "sorry, I cannot help you any further".

That was it, I called Virgin's "cancellation line" and submitted a cancellation request, and it costs $100 to cancel too. Cancelled in less than 24 hours of the reception of the service.

Virgin is the worst ISP I've ever used, bad bad services, useless support. No wonder why their connections are not bound by a contract.

Sir Richard Branson, if only your broadband was something like Virgin Air. I hope Virgin Galactic's space tour program doesn't abandon passengers in space :)
